Religion in medieval Japan
Shinto is Japan’s oldest religion. It stands for "the way of the gods". The Shinto rituals and celebrations stress harmony between deities, man, and nature. These still are the key features of the Japanese religious life and art to the present time. The introduction of Buddhism came about with the exchange of Chinese Buddhist monks. Buddhism was largely excepted as it did not replace the beliefs of Shinto. Shinto was concerned of life and Buddhism was concerned of death. The introduction of Buddhism brought with it the development of shrines for worship that weren’t of feature of the Shinto religion.
